Traveling with kids is hard. There is the constant "are we there yet" and "how much longer". Then once you're there, no matter how much fun they're having, you still have the meltdowns from over excitement and lack of routine. On top of that, trying to eat healthy outside of your elements is a challenge. On our trip that w'ere returning from I learned a lot about traveling with kids and eating healthy. My quick ideas for kids include a car bag and movies. They were saving graces for us. In the car bag we had markers (the kind that only color on special paper), books, toys, sticker pads and electronics. Then we brought things out at different times instead of all at once. Finally, traveling with kids takes patience! A whole lot of it! So go into your trip prepared and mentally ready and it won't be as bad...
While patience is required for the kiddos, it's becoming more and more easy to eat healthy while away.
First, packing a bag of healthy snacks is a great way for in the car instead of purchasing processed snacks from the gas station. One of our favorite on the go snacks are seed balls. We also found making small containers of cashews, raisins, and m and ms were a great on the road snack.
Second, choose local restaurants to eat at instead of chains. These restaurants often offer higher quality ingredients that are locally sourced.
Our favorite travel tip is cooking yourself! I know on vacation you probably don't want to spend to time cooking, but it helps to ensure you know what you're eating. We visited the local market to get fish and other items. One tip that I want to share is to bring foods with that are already started to reduce the amount of ingredients you are hauling down. We made jars. I got all the dry ingredients together in a mason jar and then added a label with the rest of the directions and what else needed to be added. This allowed for home cooking while away!
