Our oldest has it set in her head that she will be moving to Central America when she grows up. To assist her in learning more of that fabulous region, we focused this week's "food and culture" lesson on Guatemala! After reviewing the flag, I had printed out a sheet for each of the girls to color. Throughout the fun, we reviewed many interesting facts.
Did you know:
1. The favorite street-fare snack is green mangos on a skewer topped with chile and lime?
2. Quetzal are the national bird (and they're beautiful!)
3. The Ancient Mayan civilization lasted for approximately 4,000 years and suddenly vanished around 200 AD. The Mayans also loved to dance.
4. There are 19 active volcanoes in the country
5. Cacao trees thrive there and can live for up to 200 years, though they only produce fruit for the first 25 years. The fruit comes in many colors.
6. Their climate allows for year-round farming
Most importantly, they love black beans! We enjoyed Black Bean Soup, a national favorite, with tostadas!
